The latest project by Achille Castiglioni.
In 2001 Achille Castiglioni together with his friend and architect Gianfranco Cavaglià confronted the importance and meaning of handle. Together they designed a set of pencils and pens, creating various wooden prototypes which are currently kept in the Castiglioni archive. The objective is to focus attention on the importance of the pencil as a daily tool and as a means to express ideas, visions and thoughts. For these writing and drawing instruments they thought of a trefoil arched shape which, thanks to its functional characteristics, would materialize the true alliance between mind, hand and object.
“…He was missed…” “by” Achille Castiglioni (G. Cavaglià)
The drawings on paper by Castiglioni and Cavaglià express precise conceptual and aesthetic wishes to which the EGOUNDESIGN Team has brought its intuitions and technical expertise.

It all starts with a pencil

Graphene is a material obtained in the laboratory by exfoliating graphite and is made up of a monatomic layer of carbon, organized according to a crystalline structure with hexagonal cells. Its very small thickness of 0,3 nanometers allows it to be defined as a two-dimensional material. It has the theoretical strength of diamond and the flexibility of plastic. Flexible, thin, resistant, waterproof and sustainable, graphene is the material of the new millennium with ancient roots, graphite, which are rooted in our everyday life, the pencil.

If you can dream it you can print it

In additive manufacturing, starting from an empty space, the machine is able to deposit material only where it is necessary, layer by layer, until the complete piece is created. In this type of processing, the search for materials is fundamental. As regards 3D printing, innovative and above all biodegradable plastic polymers are used. In FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printing, polymers are produced in the form of filaments.

Because

Come

When

The Masters together designed a set of pencils and pens and created various prototypes made in wood by Pier Luigi Ghianda's workshop, which are kept until today in the archive of the Achille Castiglioni Foundation. The objective is to enhance and draw attention to the importance of writing as a daily action and as a means of expressing ideas and thoughts. The progressive abandonment of manual writing and the consequent abandonment of calligraphy as an expression of the character and peculiarity of the personality of the person who writes, implies a decline in sociality and creativity. And then... what is more intimate, introspective and functional than the use of pencil and pen?

MORE CAN BE DONE

The three-lobed shape

The singular shape appears to be clear, although complex to create on the product, ergonomic and suitable to be held by three fingers. It allows the writing object not to slide on the table like all other pens with a circular section and "this aspect seemed of some interest to us", recalls Cavaglià with a smile. Tools that propose a new and particular behavior: touch and use become a very particular way of expression and at the same time create an ideal union between project and user.

Guard the trail

The joint line along the body of the object certifies the slowness and production precision of each individual piece, enhancing the value of time and the quality of three-dimensional printed production. Each artefact becomes even more valuable thanks to its own sign, like a scar, unrepeatable and unique for the texture obtained from the processing of the graphene filament, for the pleasantness of touch and for the aesthetics of the natural color without further finishes.
